I suggest instead: Speaking his praise, he approached me.
I think "tassa" (his) may refer to someone else. If it was praise of
himself (reflexive), perhaps the Pali might be:
So attano va.n.na.m bha.namaano ma.m upasa.mkami.
or: So sakassa va.n.na.m bha.namaano ma.m upasa.mkami.

> Aha.m magge gacchanto tasmi.m rukkhe nisinna.m sakuna.m passi.m.
> I / on road / going / on that / on tree / seated / bird / saw
> I saw a bird perched on that tree on the road (I was) travelling.

How about the following:
As I was going along the road I saw a bird perched on that tree.
