There is a note of 'friendliness' in 'metta'.
The 'love' has tha same root as 'lubbhati' - to covet, long for.
Thus 'loving-kindness' is closer to the point.

In my opinion 'appamaa.na' means 'unconditional' (a + pamaa.na).
Thus all four brahma viharas are unconditional.
