"Já herra," sagði Búi, "yðar naut eg að því að vel fór Dofra til mín."
"Yes, lord," said Bui, "I (have) your gift, that because it went well with Dofri towards me."

Konungur mælti: "Varstu með Dofra í vetur eða fékkstu taflið?"
The king said: "Were you with Dofri during the winter and did you get the tafl-set?" (not sure if this applies: Z. eða 2 - in comparison of two unlike things, and)

"Já herra," sagði Búi, "fékk eg tafl."
"Yes lord," said Bui, "I got the tafl-set."

Konungur mælti: "Kom til mín á morgun með það.
The king said: "Come to me tomorrow with it."

Búi kvað svo vera skyldu.
Bui said it would be so.

Um daginn eftir kom Búi fyrir konung er hann sat yfir drykkjuborðum og færði honum taflið.
The next day Bui came before the King where he sat at a drinking table and brought him the tafl-set.

Og er konungur sá það mælti hann: "Þú ert mikill maður fyrir þér Búi," sagði konungur, "hefir þú sannar jartegnir að þú hefir Dofra fundið.
And when the King saw that he said: "You are a strong man, Bui," said the king, "You have true proofs that you have met Dofri. (Z. fyrir 13 - f. sér of oneself; mikill f. sér, strong, powerful

Þetta tafl hefir hann aldrei viljað fyrir mér laust láta.
He has never wanted to let loose this tafl-set for me. (Z. lauss 1 - láta e-t laust, to let loose)

En svo gildur sem þú ert þá verðum vér að sjá nokkuð af þínu afli og skaltu fást við blámann vorn."
And as recompense as you are then we are obliged to see something of your physical strength and you shall have to contend with our black man."

Búi segir: "Það hugði eg ef eg fengi taflið að þér munduð mig láta fara í friði."
Bui says: "I thought that: if I brought the tafl-set that you would let me go free."

Konungur mælti: "Þetta er lítils vert að taka eitt fang."
The king answered: "This is a little worth to wrestle only."

Búi segir: "Dýrt er drottins orð.
Bui says: "The master's word is strong. (Z. drottin 1 - dýrt er dróttins orð the master's word is strong)

Vil eg það nú skilja til við yður herra ef svo ólíklegt er að eg beri af honum að þér gefið mér upp reiði yðra og gott orlof til Íslands."
I want that now to stipulate with you, lord, if (it) is so unlikely that I surpass (i.e., win against) him that you give up your anger to me and good permission to (go to) Iceland."

Konungur játaði því.
The king promised that.

Eftir það lagði konungur til hálfs mánaðar stefnu að þetta fang tækist því að hann vildi að sem flestir sæju.
After that the king fixed a meeting in half a month for this wrestling because he wanted that as many (people as possible) see (the match).

En er sú stund var liðin þá lét konungur blása til öllu fólki út á víðan völl.
When the time had passed, the king had (a musical instrument) blown for all people out at a wide, flat field.

Sem konungur og mikið fjölmenni var þar komið þá bjóst Búi til fangs.
When the king and many followers had come there, then Bui prepared for the match.

Hann fór í skyrtu sína þá er Esja hafði gefið honum og fyrr gátum vér.
He put on his shirt, the one that Esja had given him and we previously mentioned. (Z. fara 18 - f. í klæði, to put on clothes, dress

Síðan steypti hann yfir sig fangastakki þeim er Rauður gaf honum, fór þá til leikmótsins.
Then he cast over him the wrestling jerkin, those that Red gave him, went then to the public sports place.

Konungur lét þá leiða fram blámanninn og héldu á honum fjórir menn.
The king then had led forward the black man and four men held him.

Hann grenjaði fast og lét tröllslega.
He howled firmly (i.e., loudly) and sounded fiendishly. (Z. láta 11 - to sound, give a sound)

Þar var svo háttað að þar var sléttur völlur en þar um utan hæðir miklar.
It happened there that there was a level field and there concerning without great heights. (Z. sléttr - s. völlr, level field)

Sat þar á fólkið umhverfis.
The people sat around there.

Á vellinum stóð ein hella mikil og uppþunn niður í völlinn.
On the field stood a large slab of rock and thin upwards down in the field. (??)

Það kölluðu þeir fanghellu.
They called that a stone set on the edge on a wrestling ground.

Búi gekk þá fram fyrir konung og mælti: "Hvar er sá maður herra er þér ætlið mér fang við?"
Bui went then forward before the king and said: "Where is the man, lord, who you intended me to wrestle ("fang" is really a noun rather than a verb, if I understand this correctly) with?"

Konungur mælti: "Sjá hvar þeir halda honum fram á völlinn."
The king said: "See where they hold him in front of the field."
