Þorleikur svarar: "Eigi eru föl hrossin."
Thorleik answers: "The horses are not for sale."

Eldgrímur mælti: "Eg býð þér jafnmörg stóðhross við og meðalauka nokkurn og munu margir mæla að eg bjóði við tvenn verð."
Eldrim said: "I make you equally-many a bid (for the) stud horses and some whatever is given in the bargain and many will say that I offered you a bid twice as much as (the horses) are worth.

Þorleikur mælti: "Engi er eg mangsmaður því að þessi hross færð þú aldregi þótt þú bjóðir við þrenn verð."
Thorleik said: "I am not a barter's-man because you never get this horse even though you make an offer three times the price."

Eldgrímur mælti: "Eigi mun það logið að þú munt vera stór og einráður.
Elgrim said: "That will not lied (?) that you would be large and self-willed.

Mundi eg það og vilja að þú hefðir óríflegra verðið en nú hefi eg þér boðið og létir þú hrossin eigi að síður."
I would also want that, that you had been not-good and now I have offered you and you have not valued the horses at less."

Þorleikur roðnaði mjög við þessi orð og mælti: "Þurfa muntu Eldgrímur að ganga nær ef þú skalt kúga af mér hrossin."
Thorleik turned very red at these words and said: "Eldgrim would want to be troublesome if you shall press out of me the horses."

Eldgrímur mælti: "Ólíklegt þykir þér það að þú munir verða halloki fyrir mér.
Eldgrim said: "You unlikely think that, that you would be defeated by me. (Z halloki - fara, verða halloki fyrir e-m, to be overcome, defeated)

En þetta sumar mun eg fara að sjá hrossin hvor okkar sem þá hlýtur þau að eiga þaðan í frá."
And this summer I will make an attack on the horses each of us (two) as then they are allotted to have from that time." (Z. þaðan í frá - from that time)

Þorleikur segir: "Ger sem þú heitir og bjóð mér engan liðsmun."
Thorleik says: "Do as you promise and don't ask me any odds."

Síðan skilja þeir talið.
Then they stopped talking.

Það mæltu menn er heyrðu að hér væri maklega á komið um þeirra skipti.
Men who heard that said that here was properly hit (?) concerning their parting.

Síðan fóru menn heim af þingi og var allt tíðindalaust.
Then people went home from the Thing and all was without incident.

Það var einn morgun snemma að maður sá út á Hrútsstöðum að Hrúts bónda Herjólfssonar.
It was early one morning that a man saw out at Hrut's-stad Herjolf's sons at Hrut's farm.

En er hann kom inn spurði Hrútur tíðinda.
And when he come in Hrut asked (about) the news.

Sá kveðst engi tíðindi kunna að segja önnur en hann kveðst sjá mann ríða handan um vaðla og þar til er hross Þorleiks voru "og sté maðurinn af baki og höndlaði hrossin."
He stated for himself to know no news to tell other than he stated for himself saw a man ride on the other side of the ford and there to where Thorleik's horses were "and the man dismounted and seized the horses."

Hrútur spurði hvar hrossin væru þá.
Hrut asked where the horses were then.

Húskarl mælti: "Vel höfðu þau enn haldið haganum.

Þau stóðu í engjum þínum fyrir neðan garð."
They stood in your meadows beyond (literally, below) (the) fence."

Hrútur svarar: "Það er satt að Þorleikur frændi er jafnan ómeskinn um beitingar og enn þykir mér líkara að eigi séu að hans ráði hrossin rekin á brott."
Hrut answers: "That is true that kinsman Thorleik is always un-sporting concerning grazing (plural in ON) and still I think likely that would not be that his plan to drive the horses away."

Síðan spratt Hrútur upp í skyrtu og línbrókum og kastaði yfir sig grám feldi og hafði í hendi bryntröll gullrekið er Haraldur konungur gaf honum.
Then Hrut sprang up in a shirt and linen breeks and threw over him a gray cloak and had in hand a gold inlaid halberd that King Harold gave him.

Hann gekk út nokkuð snúðigt og sá að maður reið að hrossum fyrir neðan garð.
He went out somewhat swiftly and saw that a man rode (how does "að" fit in here?) the horses beyond the fence.

Hrútur gekk í móti honum og sá að Eldgrímur rak hrossin.
Hrut went to meet him and saw that Eldgrim drove the horses.

Hrútur heilsaði honum.
Hrut greeted him.

Eldgrímur tók kveðju hans og heldur seint.
Eldrim received his greeting and slowly goes on.

Hrútur spurði hvert hann skyldi reka hrossin.
Hruit asked where he would drive the horses.
