Here’s the next instalment of Hrafnkel’s Saga.

655 Þeir leiða nú hestinn ofan eptir vellinum

They lead now the stallion (use of suffixed Def Article) down through the meadows

  Einn hamarr
stendr niðr við ána, en fyrir framan hylr djúpr.(note: deep hole is nom sg, ie the subject of the phrase)

A cliff stands down by the river before / in front of a deep pool   ( does this indicate a waterfall) A translation I have indicates the presence of a waterfall but this may be based on a variant text.)

Þar leiða þeir
nú hestinn fram á (more forward onto, I think) hamarinn.

There they lead now the horse toward the cliff

(is there a specific purpose in using the suffixed definite article) (ON´s use of the definite article is a bit of an enigma to me. Where we in modern English we would use it, they tend not to use it – recall the use of ‘konungr’ for ‘the king’ in Auðun´s story – but here it seems to be more akin to typical modern English, where it is referring to a specific horse.)

Þjóstarssynir drógu fat eitt á

höfuð hestinum,

Thjorstarssons drew (past? passed) a bag over the head of the horse (dat?) (yes, also used in ON with parts of body, where in English we would use genitive)

taka síðan hávar (tall from ’hár’)stengr ok hrinda hestinum
af fram,

Take then stout poles and shove the horse forward

binda stein.við hálsinn ok týndu honum (dative) svá.

tie  stone  to/around his neck and destroy him (acc) so

 Heitir þar síðan Freyfaxahamarr.

Called there (i.e. this place) afterwards Freyfax Cliff

Þar ofan frá (I think it is ‘down from there’, but seek a second opinion) standa goðahús þau (plural, ie those temple buildings), 660
er Hrafnkell hafði átt. (pp of eiga, owned)
Þorkell vildi koma þar.

There above (them) stands the Temple that Hrafnkell had (i.e. owned)

Thorkell wanted to come there

Lét hann fletta goðin (goð not góðr, ie gods or, at least their images; presumably Mahommet was not among them) öll.

Ordered he to strip goods all

Eptir þat lætr hann leggja eld í goðahúsit ok brenna (note: infinitive)
allt saman.
After that orders he set fire to Temple Building and burn all together (completely)

Síðan búask (prepare to go) boðsmenn í brottu.

After, returned (to the farm) the guests away

Velr (chooses, ’velja’) Sámr þeim ágæta gripi (could be any valuables but I suspect they´re probably horses)
báðum brœðrum (yes dative, because agrees with ‘þeim’ earlier in sentence, ie a reinforcement of who þeim are), ok mæla (note: 3rd pers plural, ie they speak) til fullkominnar vináttu

Readily/willingly Sam  them excellent possessions

to both brothers (dat.?) and speaks perfect friendship

með sér ok 665

to them (ser - dual form? No, just reflexive)) and

skiljask (present) allgóðir vinir.

parted very good friends   ( if góð root is good should all-góðir be pl. and mean all-good / very good) (-góðir is nom pl masc of góðr and agrees with vinir, nom pl masc of vinr.)

Ríða nú rétta leið vestr í fjörðu

(They) Ride now (the) right (usual) rout west to the fjords

ok koma heim í Þorskafjörð með virðingu.

and come home to Thorskarfjord with respect  (/value)

En Sámr setti Þorbjörn niðr at Leikskálum. Skyldi hann þar búa.

But Sam sets Thorbjorn down at Leikskalar (use of dat) he should live there (i.e. where he lived)

En kona Sáms fór til bús (note: gen sg of ‘bú’, ie a noun not a verb) með honum á Aðalból ok býr (present) Sámr þar um hríð (for a while, time, not frið (peace)).

and (the) wife of Sam came to live with him at Adalbol.

and lived Sam there in peace

I believe I have learned the value of not trying to translate when tired and not trying to make a story,

it is clearly the best way now I find to try to work more methodically.

But - to waste a Horse like that - he was not to blame - that's sick

Use of the suffixed definite article several times, then it was dropped - makes me wonder if it

is used sometimes for emphasis

Kveðja

Patricia
