Here is my translation. I have included comments on others’ translations in separate posts.

 

One question: in the clause “er á leið várit” is várit accusative or nominative? The Gordon glossary suggests that it is an impersonal construction which to me indicates that it is accusative but I don’t see why it couldn’t be nominative.

Einn dag, er á leið várit, gekk Sveinn konungr ofan á bryggjur,

One day, when (it) passed on the spring (ie spring drew to a close), King Sveinn went down onto (the) wharves

 

ok váru menn þá at, at búa skip til ýmissa landa,

and men were then (busy) at (it), to prepare ships for various lands,

 

í austrveg eða Saxland, til Svíþjóðar eða Nóregs.

Into the Eastern Way or Saxony, to Sweden or Norway.

 

Þá koma þeir Auðun at einu skipi fǫgru,

Then they (the king and) Auðun come to one beautiful ship,

 

ok váru menn at, at búa skipit.

And men were (busy) at (it), to prepare the ship.

 

Þá spurði konungr, 'Hversu lízk þér, Auðun, á þetta skip?'

Then (the) king asked, ’How does (it) please you, Auðun, about this ship?’

 

Hann svarar, 'Vel, herra.'

He answers, ’Well, Lord.’

 

Konungr mælti: 'Þetta skip vil ek þér gefa ok launa bjarndýrit.'

(The) king spoke: ’This ship I want to give to you and to reward (you for) the bear.’

 

Hann þakkaði gjǫfina eptir sinni kunnustu.

He thanked (him for) the gift according to his ability (as best he could).

 

One day, as Spring was drawing to a close, King Svein walked down to the wharves, where men were busy preparing ships destined for various lands: into the Eastern Way or to Saxony, to Sweden or Norway. He and Auðun then came to a certain beautiful ship which men were busy getting ready. Then the king asked, ‘How do you like this ship, Auðun?” “Very much, Lord” replied Auðun. The king said, “Auðun, I want to give you this ship and to reward you for the bear.” Auðun thanked him for the gift as best he could.
