This is a slight possibility, as such forms exist, but * gYHan.-s.o-r.รณ+s also existed.

I'd say analogy from the nom. -is. > -ir. first, though Latin -s- > -r- in most env. makes it uncertain.

There appear to me to be 3 Latin words for 'swift moving' specified for sky, earth, and sea. The presence of the other two w similar variation makes a different origin for the third unlikely, though it's not completely impossible if some of my assumptions turn out to be wrong.
