Because it's semantically implausible as a generic. The
Scand. forms at least go with ON <leif> 'patrimony,
inheritance', i.e., 'a leaving', cognate with OE <la:f>
'what is left, remnant, legacy, etc.', Goth. <laiba>
'remnant'.
