The meanings of raidùs give a common impression like 'straight,
even, ready, handy, comfortable'. He glosses Latvian raids
as 'bereit, fertig'. The point of departure of all of this could
well be 'passable'.

Probably, although it seems to me the only common semantic denominator that would account for both groups of meanings given by LKZ^ (1. 'clear, sharp' and 2. 'even, suitable', more or less) equally well is 'well-arranged' (cf. <visi daiktai buvo sude:ti ais^kiai ir raidz^iai>, <raidz^iai sude:k visus daiktus>, where the difference between both meanings seems to be neutralized -- click http://www.lkz.lt/startas.htm, enter <raidus> and press <Ies^koti> to see the whole entry), or rather 'put into shape, have taken shape'.
