Sounds logical enough to me, but I just don't see why he would be
called that.

Anyway, it seems Joao's Pre-Greek idea may well be right. ...even
though I don't want to believe it, because it would then become quite
undecipherable.

The same can be true for almost all Titans. Suffix -AS (-ANT-) is
very common in Giants' and Titans' names: Mimas, Gigas, Gyas,
Phorbas, Pallas.
