I know what it means, and this metaphoric use of 'embankment' doesn't
strike me as implausible.

*groza 'terror' (in East Slavic also 'tempest'), hence *grozInU
'terrible' and *groziti 'threaten'. The word is unrelated to the *gord-
etymon.
