all of these persecutions occurred in the first half
of the 9th c., and had a strong political bias, in
that they were part and parcel of Byzantine/Bulgarian
enmity. I don't remember any connection with the
Iconoclastic movement per se, but it's been a while
since I've looked at this.*****
