Consider hand positon on the keyboard. The Shift key is a normal
typing-movement, the Command key is out-of-range. Of course I have to
use Command-i when there isn't a space before the first italic
character.

Since my fonts were created before Unicode was a gleam in anyone's eye,
how could they be Unicode fonts?
