This works for me, using Word 2002 on XP:

Insert ... Symbol ... {choose my font, e.g. Symbol} ... insert the sort of arrow that I want.

Highlight that arrow.

Tools ... AutoCorrect options ... my chosen arrow should now be displayed in the "With" field of "Replace ... With", in the correct font, and with the "Formatted Text" button selected.

Type the combination of shortcut keys into the "Replace" field and save, i.e. replacing the predefined character for that combination.

From them on, AutoCorrect inserts my chosen arrow, in my chosen font, whenever I type the shortcut.

Does that work for you?

The wretched thing still won't display the true font of the arrow character in the Format ... Font fields, but at least AutoCorrect seems to pick that information up, and store it somehow with the "Formatted Text" option.
