Could I have made *The World's Writing Systems* in QuarkXpress or
InDesign (never heard of that one) -- needing both very sophisticated
typography and very sophisticated book-building, cross-referencing, and
indexing?

I used FrameMaker, and I doubt any other package could have done so
well.
