The Isaac book is indeed wonderfu. I picked up an ex-library copy of the
1899 edition a couple of years ago.

From the same period there is _Histoire de l'écriture dans l'antiquité_ by
M. Philippe Berger (Imprimerie nationale, 1891, pour le ministere de
l'instruction publique et des beaux-arts). My French really isn't good
enough to be able to compare the quality of the text to Isaac's (certainly,
the book is much shorter, being only one volume), but many of the
illustrations are comparable.
