Thank you both for your responses. Although Neumann's interpretation of
"thirst for well-being" for vibhavataṃhā is interesting, it doesn't agree
with that of the Visuddhimagga:

Yadā pana tadevārammaṇaṃ  “ucchijjati vinassatī”ti pavattāya ucchedadiṭṭhiyā
saddhiṃ pavattati, tadā vibhavataṇhā nāma hoti. Ucchedadiṭṭhisahagato hi
rāgo vibhavataṇhāti vuccati.  (Vri Vism 2.200)

I found a passage with explanations of "vibhūto" in the Padamālā which
includes a quote from that Sn verse:

Visesena bhūtoti vibhūto. Vissuto bhūtoti vā vibhūto, “vibhūtārammaṇan”ti
idametassatthassa sādhakaṃ vacanaṃ. Vibhavīti vā vibhūto, vinaṭṭhoti attho,
“rūpe vibhūte na phusanti phassā”ti idametassatthassa sādhakaṃ  vacanaṃ.
(Sadd 1.106, see also at PTS I 78-9).

I take it here that "vibhūte" in "rūpe vibhūte" has the sense of "vinaṭṭhe"
(disappeared, vanished). This is clearer than the Niddesa-aṭṭhakathā gloss
of "vītivatte" and supports Bhikkhu Bodhi's translation of the term in the
Niddesa passage. I still don't know what to make of the AN 11.10 passage
with vibhūtā.

Thanks for this brief introduction to Newmann's work. It certainly gives a
whole different meaning to the second noble truth. Now the passage from the
Padamālā that Jim quoted makes sense,
