Buddhaghosa's citations in Visuddhimagga

Dear friends,

Buddhaghosa in his *Visuddhimagga *frequently cites as support for his
interpretations what I take to be two quite distinct types of sources.

The first type is from the Suttanta Pi.taka, and he often introduces such
citations with words such as "Vutta.m heta.m...", "For this has been
said...".

The second type seems to be mainly in the form of verse, and he often
introduces these citations with words such as "Tenaahu poraa.naa...", "Hence
the ancients said...".

Could someone please inform me as to what the source of this second type of
citation ("from the ancients") is supposed to be?

Many thanks.

With metta,
Khristos Nizamis
