Thanks, Jim, that's very cool, and makes it all fall into place very
nicely.  Having a look at the dedicatory verses of Kc 1, and the statement
at 1.1, made it even more clear.  I got a lot of value out of studying these
passages a bit more.  Although, from the point of view of scholarship, I
really prefer your more literal and careful rendering, this inspired me to
add to yours (let's say, as a thank-you gift to you) the following blank
verse version:

Just as, when a solid-heartwood box is solid,

the essential jewel within it is not lost,

and its owner’s wish for a result succeeds;

so, too, when solid heartwood words are formed,

the box of sentences is also solid:

what’s named therein, the jewel of meaning, lasts,

not lost; so the Way it names cannot be lost;

and the wish, of one who walks upon that Way,

for the journey’s fruit, will finally succeed.
