Re: use of the locative

The suutra of Paa.nini to which Ole refers is:

tasminn iti nirdi.s.te puurvasya  (1.1.66)

S. M. Katre gives the following translation: 'A form stated in the locative case (ending in the seventh sUp triplet) denotes an element the unit preceding which (puurvasya) is subject to the grammatical operation introduced by that statement.'

It is interesting (a) that Kaccaayana has no corresponding sutta, leaving it to commentaries to explain this use of the locative (and attempt to rationalize it); and (b) that no suutra in Paa.nini corresponds to saraa sare lopa.m.  Paa.nini's analysis of Sanskrit sandhi includes several which delete vowels before another vowel, but always under additional conditions.

I see no grounds here for thinking that the following vowel causes elision.  And lopa.m papponti seems a little paradoxical.  Lopa.m implies na papponti.
