Hi Bryan,
I did some further checking and found that the story about the old monk I
quoted earlier from the Kaccāyanatthadīpanī (20th cent.?) appears to have
been copied directly from the Kaccāyanasuttaniddesa (mid-15 cent.). The Pali
wording is almost identical and the earlier work doesn't even mention
anything about the other story, It seems that Kaccāyana commentators borrow
heavily from their predecessors and keep adding more like the story of the
two brahmins as if one story wasn't enough!
