The trainers or learners are the ariyans who are not arahats.
Co adds: the power of the understanding (~naana) of the learners.

learners...
As to renounce or abandon, Co adds: by the magga or path.
Thus, the ariyans who subsequently reach path-consciousness at
enlightenment eradicate defilements in accordance with the path they
reach.
