Chapter on Deathlessness
1. "Amata.m te, bhikkhave, na paribhu~njanti ye kaayagataasati.m na
paribhu~njanti.
deathlessness / they / monks / not / appreciate / who / mindfulness
of body / not / appreciate
Y.P."O monks, those who do not appreciate mindfulness of the body do not
appreciate deathlessness.
----------
N: The PTS has: to partake of. To appreciate is perhaps not strong
enough. What about: see the value of?
The next para, in the negative: not practised, not gained, comes
closer to the meaning. In this para practise and gain could also be
used.
A suggestion: who do not practise mindfulness of the body do not see
the value of
deathlessness.
----------------------------------------------------------
3. "Amata.m tesa.m, bhikkhave, parihiina.m yesa.m kaayagataasati
parihiinaa.
deathlessness / to them / monks / discouraged / to whom / mindfulness
of body / discouraged
"O monks, to whom the mindfulness of the body (is) discouraged, to
them deathlessness (is) discouraged.
------
N: Discouraged is used in the sense of: a person is discouraged, or
someone else discourages a person. In this context the word seems
strange. parihiina and the following words seem very close in
meaning, namely: being heedless or neglect. It is difficult to
translate, because one cannot discourage nibbaana.
parihiina can mean: dwindled.
do you like: not taken to heart?
In the next para you have pursued which seems fine.
who does not take to heart mindfulness of the body, will not reach
the deathlessness.
------------
Y.P.: * parihiina (pp of parihaayati) dejected, discouraged.
Amata.m tesa.m, bhikkhave, aparihiina.m yesa.m kaayagataasati
aparihiinaa"ti.
deathlessness / to them / monks / not discouraged / to whom /
mindfulness of body / not discouraged
To whom the mindfulness of the body (is) pursued, monks, to them
deathlessness (is) pursued."
Y.P.Amata.m tesa.m, bhikkhave, aaraddha.m yesa.m kaayagataasati
aaraddhaa"ti.
deathlessness / to them / monks / achieved / to whom / mindfulness of
body / achieved
To whom the mindfulness of the body (is) achieved, monks, to them
deathlessness (is) achieved."
* aaraddha (adj) resolved, achieved.
----------------------------------------------------------
N: aaraddha implies energy, it is closely connected with aarambha.
another option: undertaken with energy
----------------------------------------------------------
Y.P.: 6. "Amata.m tesa.m, bhikkhave, pamu.t.tha.m yesa.m kaayagataasati
pamu.t.thaa.
deathlessness / to them / monks / is forgotten / to whom /
mindfulness of body / is forgotten
"O monks, to whom the mindfulness of the body is forgotten, to them
deathlessness is forgotten.
* pamu.t.tha (pp of pamussati) being or having forgotten.
---------
N: pamu.t.tha, this is close to neglected, but forgotten sounds
strange. Another option: abandoned.
