Dear friends,
The sentence
"Ekapuggalo, bhikkhave, loke uppajjamaano uppajjati bahujana-
ahitaaya bahujana-asukhaaya,
exhibits an intereting grammatical problem which nis usually neglected. It
concerns the phrase uppajjamaano uppajjati. In this case the participle
uppajamaano denotes the reason for the action denoted by the finite verb
uppajjati. Consequently we might translate: The is one person, monks, who by
arising i.e, because he arises, arises for the benefit of many people etc.
The commentators' remarks on the phrase is very difficult to understand
unless you recognize that they have Paanini's description of the use of the
participle in mind. See A III.2:126. Some of the tiikaa writers are only
understandable with the background of A III.2:129.
Regards,
Ole Holten Pind
