Well, if

1. sotapatti is the point of no return, and every
sotapanna will by necessity become an arahant, and if

2. the jhanas are necessary for arahatta, but not for
sotapatti,

then it follows that a sotapanna, if he has not yet
developed the jhanas necessary for arahatta, will do
so regardless of our discussion.

And if sotapatti is the point of no return, and
arahatta an unavoidable consequence of sotapatti, than
it's sotapatti that is the really important point.
