Hi Benjamin,

I realize you didn't put this question to me. Hope it's okay if I
contribute my two cents worth.

Here are a few factors conducive to jhana, based on my reading in the
pali literature, and the advice of teachers.

1. Morality, i.e. living according to 5, 8 or 10 precepts.

2. Simplicity, i.e. cutting down on distractions. No TV, outside
reading, etc, ideally to the point of going on silent retreat. Not
saying you have to turn into a hermit, but it could be a good idea to
go on a good retreat.

3. Determination, the willingness to keep at it day in and day out.

4. Generosity, donating time and money to good causes leads to a
joyous state of mind.

5. Quiet environment.

6. A teacher or a very good book, and the ability to follow
instructions. (the latter is harder than it seems, at least for me. I
find myself striking out on my own instead of just doing what the
instructions say).

Hope this helps,
