Dear students of Pali,

those of you using (as I am) a Macintosh may have noticed that it is not
wholly straightforward to convert a TrueType font from Windows to MacOS
(while the reverse is very easy). In addition, for a given font, the two
sets of ANSI-extended characters for these two environments are not
entirely compatible (for some reason mysterious to me).

Considering that, I thought it would be useful to have a Word5.1 /Mac
version of both Lily de Silva's Pali Primer + Key, and John Kelly's Pali
declensions and conjugations tables, as well as the excellent "Elementary
Pâli Course" of Nârada.

Lily de Silva's textbooks use the 1998 version of the V.R.I. Pali TT font;
John Kelly's tables and Nârada's course use the Leeds Pali Transliteration
TT font. Each font is provided with the document to which it applies both
within a compressed .zip file and a .sit file (StuffIt file).

John Kelly had noticed (2001.09.29 email) an incompatibility between the
2nd sentence of lesson 8 to translate to Pâli, between the Primer and the
Key, accordingly "breaks" has been transformed to "cuts" in the Primer.

Also, though it is very valid, I have done nothing in relation with the
following note of John in the same email:
"14. The merchant puts fish in baskets.
Key says: Vaa.nijo pi.takesu macche pakkhipati.
The chapter vocabulary lists nikkhipati as the word for puts, and
pakkhipati is not introduced until lesson 18. I checked the dictionary and
it seems that
nikkhipati has more the sense of puts down, discards ("ni" being a prefix
with a downward meaning), whereas pakkhipati means puts, places, deposits.
Thus pakhipati appears to be a better answer for this question, but is
inconsistent with the material introduced in the Primer."

John Kelly had also noticed (2001.12.19 email) an incompatibility between
the 3rd sentence of lesson 17 to translate to Pâli, between the Primer and
the Key, and accordingly "fisherman" has been transformed to "fishermen" in
the Primer.

Also from John (2001.01.09 email): "I recently discovered a typo in Pali
Primer lesson 17, on page 66, 2nd line from the bottom. The 2nd person,
plural, form of past tense for base -e verbs should be "corayittha", not
"corayitha" as shown." This correction has been implemented.

Just one IMPORTANT WARNING: the Pâli Primer appears as Mac version 0.9
because the correct translitteration of the word-roots has not yet been
done for the Macintosh version. As soon as I have time I shall address the
matter, but I believe that as it is the document might still be useful.

Let me know if there are other errors I should have taken care of (mind
you, I do not really use this book, I learned Pali another way - but I
might use it soon, I am losing my Pali by lack of practice, and a solid
rehearsal appears necessary!).

Thank you to all of you who, through their pertinent interventions, make
Pali a living language and a vibrant message.

Mettâ-cittena.
