Chapter 16

Þórir sat í búi sínu og hafði fjölmenni mikið. 
Þórir sat (remained) on his farm and had a great many-people

Kvikfé hans gekk mjög í landi Hrómundar í Gröf en þar fyrir var Þórir því vanur að hann gaf Hrómundi gelding hvert haust en lamb á vorum. 
His live-stock went much in (the) land (estate) of Hrómundr in Gröf but (and) for there (ie for that) Þórir was accustomed to that that he gave to Hrómundr a wether each autumn (fall) but (and) a lamb in (the) springs.

Það fé varð gamalt og gekk með mörkum Þóris.
That (live) stock became (ie grew) old and went with (the) (ownership) marks of Þórir.

Það var eitt haust að Þórir vandar um við rétt og varð þeim að orðum. 
That was one autumn that Þórir found-fault concerning the-general-sheep-round-up and (it) came to words with them.

En er Vöflu-Gunnar heyrði orð þeirra hljóp hann upp að Hrómundi og hjó til hans og varð þegar að vígi. 
But (And) when Vöflu-Gunnarr heard their words he ran up to Hrómundr and hewed at him and (it) came at-once to battle.

Þessu varð Þórir svo reiður að hann rak Gunnar í brott og fór hann þá í Múla til þeirra Gríms. 
Þórir became so angry at this that he drove Gunnarr away and he journeyed then to Múli to them, Grímr (and co).

En þeir gáfu honum bólstað í Þorskafjarðardal þar er nú heitir á Gunnarsstöðum og gerði þar bú en var stundum með Ketilbirni.
But (And) they gave him an abode in Þorskafjarðadalr (Cod-fjord-dale) there where (it) is now called at Gunnarsstaðir (Gunnarr’s-Steads) and (he) made there a farm but (and) (he) was (stayed) sometimes with Ketilbjörn.

17. kafli
Chapter 17

Þormóður hét maður norðlenskur. 
(There) was a man from-the-northern-lands (ie from Iceland´s northern districts) called Þormóðr.

Hann stökk norðan fyr víga sakir. 
He fled from (the) north for reasons of homicide.

Hann kemur á Hjalla til Helga og skorar á hann til vistar. 
He comes to Hjalli to Helgi and calls upon him for lodgings.

En Helgi játti að taka við honum ef hann sætti áverkum við Þóri ef hann kæmi í færi. 
But (And) Helgi agreed (said yes) to receive him if he should cause (sæta, Z3) bodily-injuries to Þórir if he should come into opportunity (ie got the chance)

Þessu játar Þormóður.
Þormóðr agrees (says yes) to this.

En það var litlu síðar er Þórir reið Kinnskæ hinum gamla yfir Þorskafjörð. 
But (And) that was a little later when Þórir rode Kinnskær (Clear-Cheek) the old over Þorskafjörð (Cod-fjord)

Þormóður var við sétta mann og var fólginn í þangi þar er Þórir skyldi á land ríða. 
Þormóðr was with (the) sixth man and was hidden in seaweed there where Þórir should ride onto land (ie ashore).

Og er hann reið af vaðlinum hljóp Þormóður upp og lagði til hans og kom lagið í síðu á hestinum og hljóp millum rifjanna. 
And when he road from the-shallow water Þormóðr leapt up and thrust towards him and the-blow came into (the) side of-the-horse and (it, the blow) ran between the-ribs.

Þórir hljóp af baki hestinum en hesturinn ærðist og hljóp út á sjóinn. 
Þórir leapt from (the) back of the horse but the-horse ran-wild (oerast) out to the-sea.

Þórir brá sverði og hjó Þormóð banahögg. 
Þórir drew (his) sword and hewed (dealt) Þormóðr (his) death-blow.

Þá hlupu þeir Helgi ofan í fjöruna og skaut Þórir spjóti í gegnum þann er fyrstur fór. 
Then they Helgi (and co) ran down to the-fore-shore and Þórir shot a spear through that-one (ie him) who went first.

En er þeir Helgi sáu að tveir eru fallnir, snýr þá síns vegar hver þeirra. 
But (And) when they Helgi (and co) saw that two are (have) fallen (in battle), then each of them goes his way.

Þórir hljóp eftir Helga og elti hann út til Kálfár og vó hann undir Helgasteini út frá Hjöllum. 
Þórir ran after Helgi and pursued him out to Kálfá (Calf-River) and killed him under Helgasteinn (Helgi’s-Stone) out from Hjallar.

Eftir það fór Þórir heim. 
After that Þórir journeyed home.

Þar heitir nú Þormóðstangi er hann féll við sjóinn en Hesttangi þar er Kinnskær kom á land.
There (ie That place) where he fell (in battle) by the-sea is now called Þormóðstangi (Þormóðr’s-Point) but (and) Hesttangi (Horse-Point) there where Kinnskær came onto land (ie ashore)
