12. kafli

Nú skiljast þeir og er Þórður hinn reiðasti og þykir honum þeir hafa gabbað sig. 

They part now and Thordr is the most angry and it seems to him they have made a game of him.

En þeir ríða nú fyrst á Gunnarsstaði og þykjast allvel leikið hafa að þeir höfðu komið Þórði í málið með sér og voru nú allkátir. 

And they now ride first to Gunnarstad and it was thought very well (to) have played a trick that they had made to come to (i.e., "played on") Thordr in spoken with him and they were now very merry.

Eigi ríða þeir nú suður að sinni en bjóða mönnum til boðs og sækja í Hvammi að ákveðnum tíma.

They now don't ride south for the present but invite people to the wedding and come to Hvammi at the appointed time.

Hafði Þórður þar mart fyrirboðsmanna og skipar mönnum í sæti um kveldið. 

Thordr had there many people invited in advance (see Brian's 6/20/13 post regarding "fyrirboðsmanna") and assigned people to seats during the evening.

Sat hann sjálfur á annan bekk og Gunnar mágur hans og hans menn en Þorkell trefill hjá brúðguma á annan bekk og þeirra boðsmenn. 

He himself sat on one  bench and his in-law and his men and Thorkel "Tatters" next to the bridegroom and their wedding guests on a second bench.

Brúðir skipuðu pall.

(The) bride occupied the raised floor along the side of the hall.

Og svo sem borð voru sett og allir menn í sæti komnir þá stökk Hersteinn brúðgumi fram yfir borðið og gengur þar að sem einn steinn stóð.

And so when (the) tables were set and all people came to (their) seats, then Herstein the bridegroom leapt from over the table and goes there to where a stone stood.

Hann steig öðrum fæti upp á steininn og mælti: "Þess strengi eg heit," sagði hann, "að áður alþingi er úti í sumar skal eg hafa fullsektað Arngrím goða eða sjálfdæmi ella."

He put one foot up on the stone and said: "I made that vow," he said, "That before the assembly is over in (the) summer I shall have have made chieftain Arngrim an outlaw or the right to judge in one's own case.

Síðan stígur hann í sæti sitt.

He then sits in his seat.

Gunnar stökk þá fram og mælti: "Þess strengi eg heit," sagði hann, "að áður alþingi er úti í sumar skal eg hafa sótt til útlegðar Þorvald Oddsson eða hafa sjálfdæmi ella."

Gunnar then leapt forward and said: "I made that vow," he said, "that before the assembly is over in the summer, I will have sought exile for Thorvald Oddson or have the right to self judgment in a case."

Upp stígur hann undir borð og mælti til Þórðar: "Hví situr þú Þórður og mælir eigi um? 

He rises up from the table and said to Thordr: "Why do you sit Thordr and not speak about (this)?

Vitum vér að slíkt er þér í hug sem oss."

We know that such is (what) you (have) in mind for us." 

Þórður svarar: "Kyrrt mun það að sinni."

Thordr answers: "It will be quiet for the present."

Gunnar svarar: "Ef þú vilt að vér tölum fyrir þig þá er það til reiðu. 

Gunnar answers: "If you wanted that we speak to you, then it is ready at hand. (Z. reiðu 3 - vera til reiðu, to be ready at hand)

En vitum vér að þú ætlar þér Tungu-Odd."

And we know what you intend, Tungu-Odd."

Þórður mælti: "Þér skuluð ráða yðrum ummælum en eg mun því ráða hvað eg tala. 

Thordr said: "You should plan your words said, and I will resolve (to do) that what I say.

Endið þetta vel sem þér hafið um mælt."

Fullfil this well as you have spoken about."

Eigi var til nýlundu fleira að boðinu en þó fór það allskörulega fram og er það þraut fór hver sem fyrir lá. 

There weren't more new, strange things at the wedding, although it took place magnificently and hard task went as was in store for.  (??)

Og líður veturinn af hendi.

The winter also passes away (not sure how "hendi" fits here).

Og er vorar safna þeir að sér mönnum og fara suður til Borgarfjarðar og koma í Norðurtungu og stefna Arngrími til þings í Þingnes og Hænsna-Þóri.

And when (it was) spring, they gathered to themselves men and go south to Borgarfjard (Burgher-inlet) and summon Arngrimr to the assembley at Thingnes and Haensna Thoris.
