Af sonum Höskuldar

Concerning Hoskuld's Sons

Nú er að segja frá sonum Höskulds.

Now (it) is (time) to tell about Hoskuld's sons.

Thorleik, Hoskuld's son, had been a great traveling-merchant and was with high-born men then when he was on trading journeys before he settled on a farm and was thought a noteworthy man.

Verið hafði hann og í víkingu og gaf þar góða raun fyrir karlmennsku sakir.

He had also been a-viking and gave there a good trial-of-courage for the sake of valor.

Hoskuld's son Bard had also been a traveling merchant and was well valued whereever he came because he was the best valiant-man and just-man of all.

Bard got-married and got a Breidfirsk woman who was-named Astrid.

Var hún kyngóð.

She was of-good-family.

A son of Bard was named Thorarin and his daughter Gudny, who married Hall, son of Viga-Styr, and from them came a great lineage.

Hrútur Herjólfsson gaf frelsi þræli sínum þeim er Hrólfur hét og þar með fjárhlut nokkurn og bústað að landamæri þeirra Höskulds og lágu svo nær landamerkin að þeim Hrýtlingum hafði yfir skotist um þetta og höfðu þeir settan lausingjann í land Höskulds.

Hrut, son of Herjolf, gave freedom to a thrall of his who was named Hrolf and there with some property and a farm at the Hoskulds' boundary and (it) lay so near the boundary that they, the Hrytlings, had failed to notice this and they had placed the freedman on Hoskuld's land. (Z. skjóta 6 - e-m skýzt yfir um e-t, one over-looks, fails to notice a thing)

Hann græddi þar brátt mikið fé.

He soon made much money there.

Höskuldi þótti þetta mikið í móti skapi er Hrútur hafði sett lausingjann við eyra honum, bað lausingjann gjalda sér fé fyrir jörðina þá er hann bjó á "því að það er mín eign."

To Hoskuld this seemed much against (his) temper that Hrut had placed the freedman by his ear, asked the freedman (to) repay (for) himself money for the land then which he lived on "because that is my own."

The freedman goes to Hrut and tells him all their discussion.

Hrútur bað hann engan gaum að gefa og gjalda ekki fé Höskuldi: "Veit eg eigi," segir hann, "hvor okkar átt hefir land þetta."

Hrut asked him to pay no attention and not repay money to Hoskuld: "I don't know," he says, "which of us two has owned this land.: (Z. gaumr - gefa gaum at e-u, to pay attention to)

Fer nú lausinginn heim og situr í búi sínu rétt sem áður.

The freedman now goes home and stays at his farm just as before.

Litlu síðar fer Þorleikur Höskuldsson að ráði föður síns með nokkura menn á bæ lausingjans, taka hann og drepa en Þorleikur eignaði sér fé það allt og föður sínum er lausinginn hafði grætt.

A little later, Thoreik, Hoskuld's son, goes on (the) advice of his father with several men to (the) farm of the freedman, he takes and kills and Thorleik owned himself and his father all the money which the freedman had made.

Þetta spurði Hrútur og líkar illa og sonum hans.

Hrut was informed of this and (he) and his sons dislike (it).

Þeir voru margir þroskaðir og þótti sá frændabálkur óárennilegur.

They were many adults and thought the body-of-kinsmen abominable (?).

Hrútur leitaði laga um mál þetta hversu fara ætti.

Hrut sought for help law concerning this case how goes direction.

And when this case was (re)searched by lawyers then they went to Hrut little to (his) advantage and men estimated that much that Hrut had set the freedman down on unpermitted land of-Hoskuld and (the freedman) had earned there wealth. (Z hag - í hag e-m, to one's advantage)

Hafði Þorleikur drepið hann á eignum þeirra feðga.

Thoreik had slain him on their, father and son's, property.

Hrut was dissatisfied with his lot and (it) was nevertheless the same(?).
