Here’s my translation. I had a few problems in some of the same spots as Grace (see underline text). Any help appreciated.

Chapter 14  Þórólfr fought Hallr


Ingjaldur hét (heita) maður. Hann bjó (búa) í Sauðeyjum. Þær liggja á Breiðafirði.
(There) was a man called Ingjaldr. He lived in Sauðeyjar (Sheep-Islands). They lie in Breiðafjörðr (Broad-Fjord).

Hann var kallaður Sauðeyjargoði. Hann var auðigur maður og mikill fyrir sér.
He was called (the) priest-chieftain-of-Sauðey (Sheep-Island). He was a wealthy man and great of himself (important in his own right).

Hallur hét (heita) bróðir hans. Hann var mikill maður og efnilegur.
His brother was-called Hallr. He was a big man and promising.

Hann var félítill maður. Engi var hann nytjungur (= nytjamaðr, a useful, worthy man) kallaður af flestum mönnum.
He was a man of-little-wealth. He was not called a useful-man by most men.

Ekki voru þeir bræður samþykkir oftast. Þótti (þykkja) Ingjaldi Hallur lítt vilja
Those brothers were most-often not in-agreement. Hallr seemed to Ingjaldr little to want (inclined)

sig semja í sið dugandi manna en Halli þótti (þykkja) Ingjaldur lítt vilja sitt ráð hefja til þroska.
to settle himself into (the) conduct of brave men (ie to do as brave men do) but Ingjaldr seemed to Hallr little to want (inclined) to raise up his (ie Hallr’s) condition to advancement (ie to promote him).


Veiðistöð sú liggur á Breiðafirði er Bjarneyjar heita. Þær eyjar eru margar
That hunting-station (fishing-ground) lies in Breiðafjorðr, which is-called Bjarneyjar (Bear-Islands). Those islands are many

saman og voru mjög gagnauðgar. Í þann tíma sóttu (soekja) menn þangað mjög til

That was then spoken that (it) became more-luckless for men in a catch if (they) became at-variance (disagreeing).

Gáfu (gefa) og flestir menn að því góðan gaum.
Most men also paid good attention to that (see gefa gaum at e-u, under gaumr, Z).


Það er sagt (segja) eitthvert sumar að Hallur bróðir Ingjalds Sauðeyjargoða kom (koma) í
That is said, one-particular summer, that Hallr, Ingjaldr Sauðeyjargoði’s brother came into

Nú hlaupa menn í milli þeirra og stöðva Hall en hann var hinn óðasti og gat (geta)
Now men jump in between them and stop Hallr but (and) he was most-frantic and (but) (he) was-not-able

þó engu á leið komið að því sinni og ekki varð fengi (fengi, not fengr) þeirra skipt.
nevertheless to bring it about (ie the blow to the head) at that time (on that occasion) and their booty did not become divided.

Réðst (ráðast) nú Þórólfur á brott um kveldið en Hallur tók (taka) einn upp fang það er þeir áttu (eiga) báðir
Þórólf now went away during the evening but (and) Hallr alone took up those provisions which they both had-a-right-to (see eiga, Z4)
