ON doesn't really have anything like the English gerund (=
verbal noun in <-ing>). In many constructions the
infinitive serves the same purpose; modern Icelandic, for
instance, has <við hættum að kaupa blaðið> 'we stopped
buying the newspaper', where <að kaupa> 'to buy' serves the
same function as the English gerund <buying>. For ON
there's <Flosi bað þá hætta at skjota> 'Flosi told them to
stop throwing [spears]' from Njála.
