Does the Íslenzk fornrit edition have <er> here? Konráð Gíslason and Eiríkur Jónsson have <at>.

On the use of <at> as a relative particle equivalent to <er>, see Zoega <at> conj. "(6) temp., þá at (= þá er), when; þegar at (= þ. er), as soon as; þar til at (= þ. t. er), until, till; áðr at (= a. en), before". According to CV "<er> [...] and <at> are used indifferently, so that where one MS. [manuscript] reads <er> another reads <at>, and vice versa" [ http://lexicon.ff.cuni.cz/png/oi_cleasbyvigfusson/b0029.png ], although <er> is more frequent.
