Ketill í Mörk átti Þorgerði dóttur Njáls sem fyrr var sagt en var bróðir
Þráins
Ketil of Mork was married to Thorgerð Njal's Daughter, as has already been said and was Thrain's brother
og þóttist hann við vant um kominn. Hann reið til Njáls og spurði
hvort hann vildi nokkuð bæta víg Þráins.
and thought to himself to be in need (vant) of his coming [he missed his brother - what a rotten position to be in)].
He rode to Njal's (place) and asked if he wished to offer compensation for Thrains death
Njáll svaraði: "Bæta vil eg svo að vel sé. Og vil eg að þú leitir þess við
bræður þína þá er bauga eiga að taka að þeir taki sættum."
Njal replied "I want to compensate so as to make it well" and I want
you to seek of your brothers if they (are entitled) to receive money
that they will accept compensation
Ketill kvaðst það vildu gera gjarna. Var það þá ráð þeirra að Ketill skyldi
fara og finna þá alla er gjöld áttu að taka og koma á griðum. Síðan reið
Ketill heim.
Ketil declared himself willing to do the work. It was then decided that Ketil should go to meet them all who had a right to receive and to come to a truce. After this Ketil rode home
Ketill fer nú að finna bræður sína og stefndi þeim öllum saman til
Hlíðarenda.
Ketil goes now to meet his brothers and called them all together at Hliðarend
Tekur hann þar umræðu við þá og var Högni með honum í allri
umræðu
He takes up (commences) there a discussion with them and Hogni was (present) with them in all discussions
og kom svo að menn voru til gerðar teknir og lagður til fundur og
voru ger manngjöld fyrir víg Þráins
and (it) came (to pass) that people were taken as judges and set a meeting (place?) and judged were-gild for Thrain's slaying.
og tóku þeir allir við bótum sem lög
stóðu til. Síðan var mælt fyrir tryggðum og búið um sem trúlegast.
and they all accepted (they all took to) the offers as (according) to the standing laws. Afterwards a truce was spoken for and prepared faithfully
Greiddi
Njáll fé allt af hendi vel og skörulega. Var þá kyrrt um stund.
Njal paid out the money from his (own) hands well and nobly. It was then quiey for a time [but for how long]
Einu hverju sinni reið Njáll upp í Mörk og töluðu þeir Ketill dag allan.
One particular time Njal rode up to Mork and they talked (Njal and) Ketil all day.
Reið Njáll heim um kveldið og vissi engi maður hvað í ráðagerð hafði verið.
Njal rode home in the evening and no one knew what had been discussed
Litlu síðar fór Ketill til Grjótár. Hann mælti til Þorgerðar:
A little after - Ketil went to Grjota (Stony River).
He spoke to Thorgerð
"Lengi hefi eg
mikið unnt Þráni bróður mínum. Mun eg enn það sýna því að eg vil bjóða til fósturs Höskuldi syni Þráins."
"Long have I greatly loved Thrain my brother - I may show that
(show how much?) because I want to ask as fosterling Hoskuld Thrain's son.
"Gera skal þér kost á þessu," segir hún. "Þú skalt veita þessum sveini allt það er þú mátt
"You shall choose (have your way) in this" she says "You shall give the boy all that you are able/that you can
þá er hann er roskinn og hefna hans ef hann er með vopnum
veginn og leggja fé til kvonarmundar honum og skalt þú þetta allt sverja."
then (when) he is full grown, avenge him if he be killed in battle (lit
killed with weapons) and pay out a dowry for him and you shall swear to all this"
Hann játtaði þessu öllu. Fer Höskuldur nú heim með Katli og er með honum nokkura hríð.
He agreed to all of this. Hoskuld now goes home with (Uncle) Ketil
and was with him for some time
This was shorter that most and seemed fairly straight forward
