Thanks LN. Looking at these again, I´m sure you are correct on both counts. Indeed, as you demonstrate ‘kvað það enga hefnd fyrir svo mikið mál’ can be translated into English word for word, without changing word order and be a perfect English construction, ie we would leave out the verb ‘to be’ as well.
