30. kafli

Gunnar hélt út úr elfinni og voru þeir Kolskeggur á einu skipi báðir en
Hallvarður var á öðru skipi. Þeir sjá nú skipin fyrir sér.
Gunnar held (course) out on (down) the river and were he and KOlskegg (both together) in one ship
and Hallvarð was on another ship they now see the ships ahead of them

Þá mælti Gunnar: "Verum vér að nokkuru við búnir ef þeir leita á oss en
eigum ekki við þá ellegar."
Then said Gunnar " Let us be somewhat prepared if they attack us otherwise let us do nothing"

Þeir gerðu svo og bjuggust við á skipum sínum.
They did so and prepared themselves with their ships
 
 
Hinir skildu í sundur skipin
og gerðu hlið í millum skipanna. Gunnar fór fram í milli skipanna.
The others divided asunder (two groups) with a large gap (Z) between
Gunnar went between the ships (between the two groups)
 
 Vandill
þreif upp stafnljá og kastaði á meðal skipanna og í skipið Gunnars og dró
þegar að sér.
Vandil took up a grappling hook (Z) and threw it over and into Gunnar's ship and at once
pulled up (alongside)
 
 Ölvir hafði gefið Gunnari sverð gott. Gunnar brá nú sverðinu
og hafði hann eigi sett á sig hjálminn, hleypur þegar á saxið á skip Vandils
og hjó þegar mann til bana.
Olvir had given Gunnar a good sword. and Gunnar now drew the sword
and though he had not set upon himself a helmet leaps at once onto
the prow (Z) of Vandil's ship and there cut a man to his bane (death)
 
Karl lagði að öðrum megin sínu skipi og skaut
spjóti um þvert skip Gunnars og stefndi á hann miðjan.
Karl pulled up  on the other side of his (Gunnar's) ship and cast a spear
across Gunnar's ship - aimed at his middle
 
 
Gunnar sér þetta og
snerist svo skjótt að eigi mátti auga á festa og tók hinni vinstri hendi
spjótið og skaut á skip til Karls og hafði sá bana er fyrir varð.
Gunnar sees this (spear) and turned himself (swung round) so swiftly
that no eye might see and caught it in his  left hand and threw it back
to Karl's ship and he who got in the way (a man) had his bane (death)
 
Kolskeggur
þreif upp akkeri og kastar á skip Karls og kom fleinninn í borðið og gekk út
í gegnum og féll þar inn sær kolblár og hljópu menn allir af skeiðinni og á
önnur skipin. Gunnar hljóp nú aftur á sitt skip.
Kolskegg drew up the anchor and cast it onto Karls ship  and came the fluke
(well the pointed end) into the board (side) and went through it and fell therein
the black/blue (or coalblack) sea and men leapt from the warship and onto other ships
Gunnar leapt back to his (own) ship

Þá kom að Hallvarður og tókst nú bardagi mikill. Sáu þeir nú að formaður var
öruggur og gerði hver að slíkt er mátti.
Then came Hallverð and took himself now (in) a great battle
Saw they now their leader was  courageous and all did their best as
they were able 
 
Gunnar gerði ýmist að hann hjó eða
skaut og hafði margur maður bana fyrir honum.
Gunnar fought variously (G) with sword or spear that many
a man met his death by him
 
 Kolskeggur fylgdi honum vel.
Karl hljóp á skip til Vandils bróður síns og börðust þeir þaðan báðir um
daginn.
Kolskegg followed/supported him well
Karl leapt into the ship to Vandil his brother they fought there
both together for the day

Kolskeggur tók hvíld um daginn á skipi Gunnars og sér Gunnar það og mælti
til hans: "Betri hefir þú öðrum verið í dag en þér því að þú hefir gert þá
óþyrsta."
Kolskegg took a pause during the day on Gunnar's ship
and Gunnar sees this and spoke to him
"You havd been better to others today than yourself for they
are not to be thirsty
 
Why does he say  this - is he referring to the dead who cannot now suffer thirst
or do the others have ale on board that Gunnar's men may have to drink now
 
This - I hope will be well received  because I am using Yahoo and I prefer O/E
which works better for me
