No it's just me getting confused again; I was thinking it must be past
subj. for some reason... Here's my attempt at the next one, from Ch. 24.

Þér skalk Hrútr at hváru
(hefk óð) í dag (góðan)
skora á hólm ok hjálma
haldruðr við mik skjalda,
þeir sé er hirðendr heyra
Heðins gáttar nú váttar,
auðs nema út vilir greiða
ölr mund refils grundar.

I shall however challenge you, Hrut, holder of helm and shield
(warrior), to a duel with me today -- I start a good song (i.e. this
verse) -- let those keepers of Hedin's gate (shield-keepers =
warriors) who hear be witnesses (to this my challenge) -- unless,
alder of wealth of Refil's field (man = Hrut), you want to pay up the
groom's contribution.

I'm a bit unsure about the end. If 'refils grund' is the sea, then I
would have expected some word for fire or light in place of 'auðs' --
unless I've completely lost track here -- but I've met some
tautologies before, so I'm tentatively guessing "wealth of the sea" =
"wealth".
