Þorbjörn mælti þá mörg herfilig orð til bróður síns
Þorbjörn spoke then many a bitter word to his brother

ok segir því síðr dáð í honum sem meira lægi við.
and said for this reason (there was) less courage in him as more (was)
at stake.

Hann ríðr nú í brott, ok skiljask þeir með lítilli blíðu.
He now rode away and they parted with little friendliness.

Hann léttir eigi, fyrr en hann kemr ofan til Leikskála, drepr þar á dyrr.
He didn’t stop until he came over to L., (and) knocked at the door.

Var þar til dura gengit.
(Someone) went to the door.

Þorbjörn biðr Sám út ganga.
Þorbjörn asked S. to come out.

Sámr heilsaði vel frænda sínum ok bauð honum þar at vera.
S. greeted his kinsman gladly and invited him to stay? there.

Þorbjörn tók því öllu seint.
Þorbjörn took it ?? slowly.

Sámr sér ógleði á Þorbirni ok spyrr tíðenda,
S. saw sadness in Þorbjörn and asked his news,

en hann sagði víg Einars, sonar síns.
then he told of the killing of Einar, his son.

'Þat eru eigi mikil tíðendi', segir Sámr, 'þótt Hrafnkell drepi menn.'
“That is not much news,” said S., “that Hrafenkell kills men.”

Þorbjörn spyrr, ef Sámr vildi nökkura liðveizlu veita sér.
Þorbjörn asked, if S. would give any support to him (in his claims).

'Er þetta mál þann veg, þótt mér sé nánastr maðrinn,
(I couldn’t make sense of these two lines)
at þó er yðr eigi fjarri höggvit.'

'Hefir þú nökkut eptir soemðum leitat við Hrafnkel?'
“Have you asked for any compensation from Hrafnkel?”

Þorbjörn sagði allt it sanna, hversu farit hafði með þeim Hrafnkeli.
Þorbjörn told the truth of how it had gone with Hrafnkell and himself.

'Eigi hefi ek varr orðit fyrr', segir Sámr,
“I have not been aware of it before,” said S.,

'at Hrafnkell hafi svá boðit nökkurum sem þér.
“that Hrafnkell had so offered any as(what he offered) to you.

Nú vil ek ríða með þér upp á Aðalból,
Now I will ride with you up to A.,

ok förum vit lítillátliga at við Hrafnkel,
and we will approach Hrafnkell humbly,

ok vita, ef hann vill halda in sömu boð.
and know if he will keep (his) compensation offer.

Mun honum nökkurn veg vel fara.'
It must any way (be that) it will go well with him (?)”

'Þat er bæði', segir Þorbjörn, 'at Hrafnkell mun nú eigi vilja,
“What he offered,” said Þorbjörn, “that Hrafnkell will not now intend
(to do),

enda er mér þat nú eigi heldr í hug en þá, er ek reið þaðan.'
moreover, it is not to me now not preferable to my mind (to accept the
offer?) than when I rode away.

Sámr segir: 'Þungt get ek at deila kappi við Hrafnkel um málaferli.'
S. said, “(It) is hard to get agreement to contend with Hrafnkell about
lawsuits.”
