I don't think so. Skt. śárman 'cover, shelter, protection, refuge, safety'; śaraṇá 'protecting, defending'; ā-śāra 'shed, shelter'; upāśara 'protection'; cf. Old Averstan sar- 'shelter' -- all point to the meaning 'shelter, protection', while one would hardly say that the cream "protects" the boiling milk.

Where dod you find this etymology? The term śáras is post-Rigvedic, and I could not trace your proposed etymology in any of the dictionaries I have access to.
