Because (some special environments aside) in a non-initial open syllable
all Latin short vowels are weakened to /i/. Compare cano:/cecini:,
dedi:/reddidi:, caput/capitis, etc. If you haven't ever seen "any
explanation" of one of the best-known phonological rules in Latin, just
read any history of the language. They all explain it.
