BTW, the Modern Polish form of the name, <Wacl/aw>, is a loan from
Czech. The Old Polish version was <Wie,cesl/aw> (or <Wie,cl/aw> with the
syncope of the medial syllable).


And Wl/adisl/aw?  Wasn't that Gomulka's first name?
