That's *voldi-slavU 'rule + fame'. The first element is the same as
Germanic *walD- (Eng. wield etc.). Again, the expected Polish form
should be (and was once) <Wl/odzisław>, but Czech cultural influence
during the Renaissance led to the "bohemisation" of the name.

Generally, Proto-Slavic medial *oRC (where R = r or l) became East
Slavic oRoC, Polish and Sorbian RoC, and Czech, Slovak and South Slavic
RaC, hence the variants <volod-/vlod-/vlad-> (Russian Vlad- as in
Vladimir is of Church Slavic origin, hence the Southern vocalisation,
but the pet-form is still Volodya).
