Problem is Greek culture was appropriating gods and goddesses right left and centre, and then 'tweaking' their myths to make them fit into the Olympic pantheon. Athena is possibly a Minoan deity from Crete - her origins were truncated - hence her 'birth' as an adult directly from the head of Zeus.
