Because (1) the standard notation used in PIE reconstructions is not the
IPA transcription system; (2) my personal view on the pronunciation of
*h1, *h2 and *h3, although shared by many other linguists, is not
universally accepted and I don't want to use a private trancription that
might confuse other people. Whenever the phonetic value is relevant, I
mention it. The question of the phonetic values of the laryngeals has
come up on Cybalist a number of times and my opinion about it is no
secret to regular members interested in the topic.
