I very much doubt that I've made so simpleminded a claim,
though I have certainly commented unfavorably on some
specific exercises in macro-comparison.

There's nothing a priori about the reasoning involved.
Neither is it particularly abstruse, and I confess that I
find myself wondering whether you really don't understand
it, or whether you'd simply rather not deal with it.
