Not at the stage I was discussing (when pre-PIE had *a, *i,
*u and *a:, *i:, *u:). Even after most *u's and *i's had
developed into *e (or zero), /u/ and /i/ remained as vowels
under certain circumstances until PIE. Do you accept the
root *tu "thou"?
