They also explain other things, e.g. lengthening in compounds, as in
Ved. su:nar-, Av. hu:nar-, Gk. *wa:nor- > e:norée: from *(h1)su-h2nor-,
not to mention other, subtler effects. In a few cases they even show
show up directly in Hittite as h(a)- (*h2neh3-, *h2meh1-, *h2mei-).
