I mean here that the Rule is:

1) Latin ss > Spanish s

Latin passus 'step' > Spanish paso (Italian passo, Romanian pas(u))
Latin ossum 'bone' > Spanish hueso (Italian osso, Romanian os(u) )
----------------------------------------------------------------

Notes:
1. that The Spanish rojo is not from Latin russus but from a Latin
roseus (I would say that the form was in fact rosseus) (as Romanian
ros,u /roshu/ is too)
2. the Spanish bajo supposed (again) a Latin *bassiu not directly a
Latin bassus
3. so only Latin /-ssy-/ > Spanish j is regular as we have already
discussed
