I should explain that I believe in a PIE compound
with 'earth':

and that it is reanalyzed and changed to a neuter in
-om in most languages in most forms, leaving a few
traces such as the above and a Greek empodó:n
'underfoot' as khthó:n. Contamination with the word
for 'foot' often changes e>o here.
