Perhaps not so simple that building and German Bildung have the same
source, despite the likeness (and the sensible imagery of building
something inside your skull).

The work of etymology I have access to (Hellquist) indicates that
Bild, image, has something to do with twin, doubleness.
He quotes a parallel between Latin ima:go and Sanskrit yáma- twin,
though mentioning this as rather doubtful.

It would be interesting to have more updated contributions to these
etymologies from the members of this board.
